Tank Vaporizers Overtake E-Cigs in Sales

Insofar as vaping and smoking are concerned, “traditional” have always meant “tobacco or cigarette smoking.” For those riding the wave of vaping, “traditional” can also refer to look alike e-cigarettes with pre-filled cartridges now. The newer kid in the block called “open system devices or tank vaporizers” allowing vapers to mix and match e-liquids and hardware, are now fast-gaining wide popularity. If you need convincing, check out the recent headline about open system vaporizers officially overtaking e-cigs.

We have discussed the topic and comparison of the two vaporizer types more than once, and why high quality e-cigs still very much have their place. Personally, I have always used a combination of both and will continue to do so, due to the maintenance and cleaning required with tank vaporizers. My wife knows all about cleaning tanks, and wrote a piece on why she prefers disposable cartridges over re-filling her own tanks, but that’s not to say that vaporizer tanks aren’t any good. They just require constant cleaning, and remembering to have replacement atomizers ordered, but all of that effort comes with a big advantage; higher powered eGos and PVs deliver higher amounts of nicotine past the 5 minute mark, when compared to ecigs. That alone counts for lots of new sales increasing the statistics of tank models. But, before you make the jump, keep in mind that high voltage does increase risk, and new studies are demonstrating the toxicity levels of the vapor being much higher. Just stick to moderately powered ones to stick on the safe side.

What the Figures Say

Those involved with vaping and e-cigarettes have always sensed the shifting preference of vapers to the open system vaporizers. That, however, doesn’t bear any weight being unofficial. It is only last September this 2014 that open system vaporizers were officially acknowledged to be selling faster than traditional electronic cigarettes.

Wells Fargo Securities reported that the sales of the open system vaporizers has now climbed to over $1.5 billion, higher by $500 million than the $1billion reported sales of traditional electronic cigarettes. This figure accounts for about 60 percent of the current sales. Experts say this figure continues to grow by the day. This is an important trend that the e-cig industry is closely watching, as it dictates the future strategies that traditional e-cig manufacturers and makers of open system vaporizers will take in the coming days.

Why the Shift in Trend

The versatility is an undeniable edge that open system vaporizers enjoy over the more “traditional e-cigs.” This significant feature allows vapers to enjoy a more customized experience if you’re a techy type user. Another plus that open system atomizers offer vapers is their economy being less costly in the long run, but requires a higher investment at first. But, these are not significant and most users are just everyday people with no want in having to mix and match parts, selecting a pre-assembled device anyways. The main advantages are higher vapor output, and slightly faster nicotine  delivery, with longer battery and cycle time than small e-cigs.

Part of that statistic showing an increase and surpassment, is also directly linked to the fact that e-cigs all use rechargeable lithium batteries, which means you don’t need to purchase a new one every month, only cartridges, tanks and e-liquid are required.

Benefits for the Retailers

Open system tanks or atomizers are also the retailers’ favorites as they offer higher profit margins to them. In the coming months, expect that a side-by-side display of open tank systems and traditional e-cigarettes would merit more sales for the former. Consequently, it is inevitable that retailers would allot more space for the open system vaporizers, easing out the traditional e-cigs in the long run. But, overall, sales for all vaporizers are still on the rise, and retail outlets are most likely not going to survive.

Purchasing over the shelf usually negates all the savings made possible from purchasing directly from the manufacturer online. And since these store outlets are limiting themselves to the same re-distributed vaporizers, they fall on depending on e-liquid sales to survive, and that is the main reason tank systems are much more beneficial for them to sell.
