Protect your E-Cigarette Batteries from Summer Heat

The summer is here the sun is out and everyone is out having fun. With today’s technological advancements, we now carry an array of devices from laptops, tablets smartphones and now electronic cigarettes that all contain heat sensitive components and very importantly lithium ion rechargeable batteries. In summer time, the risk of accident increases and is not just limited to e-cigarettes. Leaving any type of rechargeable lithium battery out in the sun or somewhere hot during the summer can lead to disaster.

We recently stressed the importance of safety around e-cig battery charging as well as properly storing and carrying them with you as well as warning to never leave batteries in hot places such as your car. You can possibly get away with it during colder winder or fall months, but the summer heat is unforgiving. The same way you would never leave your child or pet in your car to cook like a hot-dog, you would not want to leave electronics inside the vehicle. It would always be best to at a minimum, store the items in the trunk of the car where the temperature is slightly cooler, or even better take them back indoors with you, whenever possible.

If we take away the risk of fire or explosion, you should still care that heat will diminish battery performance and lifespan. Lithium Ion batteries best operate in cool temperatures between 14°F and 86°F. Batteries that heat up to extreme temperatures will drain quickly and possibly lead to severe failure. It is the number one cause of battery problems, so overall, even if there is no danger or physical risk, you would rather pick a cool spot over a hot environment.

Summer time also brings lots of humidity in many places around the world. This is another problem causing element for lithium batteries and it is important to remember not to leave your e-cig carrying case outside or in the sun for extended periods of time. Avoid using your e-cig extensively under a hot summer sun on the beach without some shade, in order to limit the times you bring the battery to hot temperatures.  Always avoid keeping it with you in humid spaces such as the washroom while taking a shower. Remember that even if it does not damage your battery on the first time, a repetitive exposure to heat and or humidity certainly will progressive damage it.

Most of this is obvious to all of you, but it always helps to be reminded to be extra careful this summer. Applying these basic safety tips to all your lithium battery powered devices is good practice to protect your investments while avoiding disastrous outcomes from leaving batteries in extreme temperatures. Remembering to give your e-cig batteries some shade this summer is all that is needed to keep you smiling and hopefully smoke free!
