When you smoke and your husband, wife or partner doesn’t, you are very much likely in for arguments on the topic. Having children is also a difficult challenge, as you are not only potentially harming them, but also sending the wrong example. A lot of smokers view their partner’s distress over their smoking as merely nagging or as just a reason for them to pick at them when they are aggravated. The truth is, the impact smoking has on your personal life also carries onto your partner’s well-being. Being a non-smoker represents a very different daily routine and can often clash with that of a smoker.
I Will Be Right Back!
How many times do you have to step forth from an event or gathering to go catch a smoke? What about when you are out to dinner? Smoking, even if you do not realize it, inhibits you from being completely present in the moment. When you are a smoker and your partner is not there are probably several occasions where you have to stop whatever you are doing and go outside to grab a smoke. Additionally, this becomes a regular occurrence that although unnoticed by the smoker, can be very aggravating for your partner, often left alone to care for the children or waiting patiently for your return.
The Smell is Awful
Until you quit smoking you cannot smell how bad tobacco cigarettes really are. There is no nice way to put it. Your partner that does not smoke can smell the smoke on you long after you think it is gone. It is such a pungent odor that just sticks to everything like glue and affects your life in many ways. It is a complete turn off when you do not smoke to smell someone that does! Unfortunately, it does not end there. If you regularly smoke in the house or the car, you are exposing your partner to retain and carry the same smoky smell without having a choice. If you have kids, do you really want them to wear clothes that smell like cigarettes at school
The Financial Burden
Cigarettes are expensive! If you smoke one pack a day you are spending up to $4000 a year on cigarettes and you may be spending far more depending on where you live. That is a lot of money to be spending and your partner notices! In your partners eye’s you are literally burning up money for something that is cutting quality years from your life. That money can be well invested in your child’s education, or a yearly family vacation trip.
Health and Well-Being
More important than any amount of money is health. Smoking will undermine your health and stop you from being able to live an active lifestyle with your family. Your kids don’t want to see you go early and neither do any of your loved ones. Just as importantly, smoking near and around your family means you are subjecting them to second hand smoke, potentially harming their health in the long term as well.
Before you get angry and fight and try to defend your position on smoking, consider that your whole family has a stake in your wellness both physically and financially. They want to spend many years to come with you, that is why they fuss over your smoking. E-cigarettes may be the answer. It is a way for you to get your nicotine fix without the harmful side effects of tobacco smoke and it costs a fraction of the price.
