New Medical Device Inspired By Electronic Cigarettes

Just recently, a new project was made public on what would be the first medical smoking cessation electronic cigarette. Reuters reported on the story of Noah Minskoff, who was a medical student when he lost his mother to lung cancer back in 2007. At the time, he asked himself if e-cigarettes could have helped her quit and possibly save her life, and that’s where the idea started developing. He sent some devices to a childhood friend of his whom was now an engineer to have a look.

Nathan Terry, Minskoff’s friend, used his engineering background to dissect the device apart and was appalled by what he found. The quality of the vapor device was far from acceptable with unsheltered wiring, plastic and metals way to close to the heating source, risking the user to inhale unhealthy contaminants. Although this was back when e-cigs had just started growing commercially and low quality products we’re flooding market, it is still just as important today, to buy from reputable manufacturers only. The risk of saving a few dollars on a cheap knockoff is not even close to being an acceptable risk.

But Terry saw the possibility to make it safe and ran with it. He designed a new electronic cigarette which did not use fiberglass or plastic and not even solder around the heating element. Back in 2009, he met again with his friend Noah whom had inspired him, and the two started their own company called Thermo-Essence Technologies.

You might recognize the brand as the manufacturer behind the Thermovape Cera vaporizer. It is one of the most expensive Personal vaporizers available costing around $250-$300, but being such a high build quality that has health and safety in mind, over 30,000 units have been sold to date. The duo did not stop there, as this adventure finally led them to want to develop a medial version which would be specifically designed as a smoking cessation device only.

The idea is to develop an inhaler that would provide nicotine dosage in a gradually decreasing system. The same idea as patches. Although similar products exist, none of them are real vaporizers and just dispense nictine through the inhaler. This would be the first product of its kind stemming from the electronic cigarette industry. Having experience in the development of these devices, they will most likely have an advantage at developing an inhaler that will have good results with long time smokers. We wish them luck and hope to see more ways for smoking cessation to become more accessible to all.
